Wave Model Development

As a result of continuing research conducted within NCOF, and increasing capacity on the Met Office supercomputer, NCOF models are subject to an ongoing programme of improvement and development.

For the wave models the development cycle over the next 5 years will include:

  • Testing and transition to a third-generation scheme (WaveWatch III) across whole suite of models. First phase is 'proof of concept' and establishment of validation test-bed - work to commence late 2007. Expected transition date to the 3G model is Autumn 2008.
  • Replacing existing European (35km) and UK Waters (12km) domain models with a single North Atlantic European (12km) model. NAE model currently in operational test phase - change expected Autumn 2008.
  • Initiate a UK Coastal Waters (4km) model forced by the latest high-resolution (4km) Met Office mesoscale atmospheric model. Model has passed 'proof of concept' - change anticipated 2009.
  • 'Proof of concept' testing of a short-range (3 day) wave model ensemble. Work commenced mid-2007.
